1.Resolving Boundary Errors in Commission Modeling
step chart and data table · 2026
A financial modeler needed to visualize a three-tier commission structure to resolve a boundary error in their financial model. Instead of relying on a complex percent formula excel setup, they used a step function chart mapping revenue values ($0 to $4,000) to commission percentages (40% to 60%). Color-coded bands denote the tiers: a purple 40% tier for values below $1,000, a green 50% tier up to $3,000, and a red 60% tier above $3,000. Red diamond markers highlight critical boundary points at exactly $1,000 and $3,000. A tier logic panel and sample points from a CSV confirmed edge cases, eliminating the silent errors found in their previous template.
What it shows:
Visualizing step functions with explicit boundary markers prevents silent calculation errors in tiered financial models.
